Bio/Background

For as long as I can remember, I have always been close to the ocean. Growing up in the Marlborough sounds, fishing has always been prominent in my life.

I've always had a passion for fishing and adventure, but it wasn't until my early teens where this passion turned into more than just a weekend hobby. Fishing has now taken me to some of the finest fishing destinations on the planet, such as Oman, Panama, Cabo, and Kona, but I still find it hard to leave my home waters of the Marlborough Sounds.

Specialty and Favourite Types of Fishing

The outer Marlborough Sounds remains one of my favourite areas to fish, and is also the fishery I have spent the most time amongst. The potential for trophy fish in these waters are high, and there is a certain allure with this fishery that keeps me casting/jigging until I can't anymore. Topwater fishing is easily my favourite technique, there's nothing quite like watching an XL South Island Kingfish explode on your unsuspecting lure!

Most Memorable Catch

I've been fortunate enough to experience some amazing fishing and moments out on the water, but I think my most memorable catch would have to be a Yellowfin Tuna caught handlining in Oman. Our goal over in the Arabian Sea was to catch Yellowfin Tuna on topwater gear. We would fish around the dolphin pods, alongside the local commercial fishermen who were catching massive numbers of Yellowfin on hand lines from their small pangas. There was one particular group of fishermen who we kept bumping into whilst offshore, we had been seeing them on the water almost everyday for two weeks, and we would give them water and sandwiches to help them get through the long hot days. On one of the final days of the trip, our new friends on the panga came over and invited me to join them for the afternoon, commercial handlining for Yellowfin Tuna. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, but I couldn't turn down this once in a lifetime opportunity. I hopped aboard this tiny panga, about 50 miles out at sea, and got stuck into some of the most incredible fishing I've ever experienced. We overcame the arabic to english language barrier, and these master fishermen taught me how to handline for these stunning Yellowfin. It was an unreal experience, and it's certainly one of my most memorable moments out at sea.

Daiwa Essentials

My Daiwa essentials have to be the new Saltiga Breakthrough C82-8 paired with the Saltiga 14000 . The Breakthrough rod is a true work of art, and a real pleasure to fish with.

A lot of my time on the water is spent casting around the topwater gear, and with this combo being super light, easy to cast, with tons of stopping power, it makes the whole topwater experience just that little bit sweeter.

Favourite Fishing Spot

One of my favourite fishing spots would have to be North Cape, up in the Far North. The best Snapper fishing I've ever had has been up there, and there are some proper giants lurking around. The whole northern coast has unreal Snapper and Kingfish fishing, and it's another area that has that same big fish aura that D'urville Island has.
